The Best Time of Year for a Wedding near Lake Como: A Season-by-Season Guide

The date is one of the first decisions in planning a wedding, and for a wedding weekend it affects more than the weather on the day. It determines how the garden looks, at what time the ceremony can begin, how long the evening stays light and what guests can do on the days before and after. This guide describes the seasons at Villa Sofia, in Sirtori, twenty minutes from Lake Como and thirty from Milan, to help you choose.

Spring: April and May

In spring, usually in April, the centuries-old wisteria in the garden comes into flower; the exact weeks change from year to year. Daytime temperatures are mild, while mornings and evenings are still fresh, so guests appreciate a light jacket after sunset.

Spring weather in Lombardy is changeable, with sunny days alternating with rain. For a ceremony outdoors, it is worth agreeing an alternative plan for rain with your planner well in advance. In mid-May the sun sets at around a quarter to nine in the evening, which leaves time for a ceremony in the late afternoon and an aperitivo in daylight.

Early summer: June

June brings the roses in the garden and the longest days of the year: around the solstice the sun sets after nine in the evening, and the light lasts well beyond. A ceremony can begin late in the afternoon, and dinner can start while it is still light outside.

Temperatures are warm but rarely as intense as in July and August, which makes June one of the most requested months for weddings in northern Italy. For a Saturday in June, couples often start looking for a venue a year or more in advance.

High summer: July and August

July and August are the warmest months, with hot afternoons and long, mild evenings that can be spent entirely outdoors. A ceremony in the early evening, after the strongest heat, is the most comfortable choice for guests. In mid-July the sun sets after nine, in mid-August at around half past eight.

Summer afternoons can bring short thunderstorms, so an alternative plan for rain is useful in this season too. Around the 15th of August, the Ferragosto holiday, many businesses in Italy close for a few days: if your date falls in that period, it is worth confirming photographers, florists and catering early. For guests, these are the months when a day on Lake Como, twenty minutes away, is most enjoyable.

September

September is often considered the best month for a wedding in this part of Italy. The days are still warm, the weather tends to be more settled than in spring, and from the afternoon onwards the light becomes softer and warmer. Evenings are cooler, so guests will want an extra layer after dinner. In mid-September the sun sets at around half past seven.

It is also the season of the grape harvest on the hills of the Parco del Curone, around the villa. Like June, September weekends are among the first to be requested, so it is wise to plan early.

October

October brings the colours of autumn to the woods of the Parco del Curone and to the garden. The days are shorter and cooler: in mid-October the sun sets at around twenty to seven, and after the clocks go back at the end of the month, shortly after five. A ceremony in the early afternoon makes the most of the daylight, and in the evening the celebration naturally moves indoors.

October is a quieter period in the area, and it is often easier to find availability among photographers and other professionals. It suits couples who prefer a more intimate atmosphere.

Choosing a date with the whole weekend in mind

Because the wedding is a stay of two or three days, a few questions go beyond the weather. If many guests travel with children, check the school holidays in their home countries, which can make some weekends easier and others more difficult. If guests fly in, it is worth looking at flight connections before fixing the date. If you would like your guests to spend time on Lake Como or in Milan on the day after the wedding, the warmer months make it easier.
